‘Hands Off Our Grandma’: Protests In US After Elderly Punjabi Woman Held In Immigration Raid

A 73-year-old Indian-origin woman has become the focus of growing protests in California after she was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during what her family believed would be a routine check-in.

Harjit Kaur, a long-time resident of Hercules in California’s East Bay, has lived in the United States for over 30 years.

She was taken into custody by ICE on September 8 in San Francisco and transferred the next day to the Mesa Verde ICE Processing Center in Bakersfield, according to her family.
